The bathroom is where most falls at home happen, and it is also where dignity matters most. A shower commode chair lets someone be wheeled over the toilet and into a roll-in shower without transfers in between; a tilt commode does the same for someone who cannot sit upright unsupported. They are heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant pieces of equipment, and the good ones are expensive new.

What to check when buying a used commode or shower chair
- Seat width and the doorway. A commode chair has to fit through the bathroom door and over the toilet. Measure the door, the toilet height and the space either side before choosing.
- Self-propel or attendant-propelled. Large rear wheels let the user push themselves; small castors mean a caregiver pushes. Aquatec's Ocean range comes in both.
- Tilt. A tilt commode supports someone who cannot sit upright for the time a shower or toileting takes. It is heavier and needs more room to tilt.
- Height. The seat has to clear the toilet bowl, and some chairs are height-adjustable.
- Weight capacity. Standard chairs are commonly around 300–330 lb; extra-wide models like the Ocean Ergo XL go higher and are wider.
- Frame condition. Stainless or aluminium frames should show no rust at welds; plastic seats and pans should be uncracked. Anything cracked cannot be properly disinfected and we do not resell it.
What we check before listing a commode or shower chair
- Frame checked for corrosion, cracks and play, particularly at welds and adjustment points.
- Seat, backrest, armrests, footrests and pan checked for cracks; cracked plastics are replaced or the item is not sold.
- Castors, brakes, and tilt mechanism where fitted, cleaned and tested.
- Cleaned and disinfected thoroughly, every surface.
- Seat width, height and weight rating recorded on the listing.

Bath Safety & Commodes: questions people ask
Will a shower commode chair fit over my toilet?
Most standard toilets are about 15–17" high, and most commode chairs are made to clear that; some are height-adjustable. What catches people out is the width between the wall and any grab bars, and the bathroom door. Measure the door opening, the toilet height and the clear width either side of it and we will tell you whether a particular chair fits.
What is the difference between a commode and a shower commode chair?
A bedside commode is a fixed chair with a pan, used next to the bed. A shower commode chair is on wheels, made of corrosion-proof materials, and rolls over the toilet and into a roll-in shower so the person does not have to transfer in the bathroom at all. A tilt shower commode adds tilt-in-space for someone who cannot sit upright unsupported.
Are used commodes hygienic?
Yes, if they are cleaned properly and their plastics are intact — which is our rule. Every commode and shower chair is stripped, cleaned and disinfected on every surface before it is listed, and anything with a cracked seat, pan or backrest is not resold because cracks cannot be disinfected.
Do you deliver bath safety equipment?
Yes. Delivery for bath safety items is $100 in Greater Victoria and the Cowichan Valley, $150 in the Nanaimo and Parksville areas, and from $200 in the Lower Mainland — one charge per order. Smaller items can sometimes travel with another delivery at no extra cost.
Do you buy used commodes or shower chairs?
No. Commodes, shower chairs and other bathroom safety items are on the list of equipment we do not buy. Local loan programs sometimes accept them if they are in good condition.
