A manual wheelchair is only as good as its fit. Two inches too wide and the person leans and strains a shoulder every time they push; a seat that is too deep cuts into the back of the knees; a back that is too high stops the shoulders. That is why we do not just ship chairs: for any manual wheelchair we bring it to you for a one-hour fitting, adjust it on the spot, and only then does anyone decide.
The chairs we carry are mostly lightweight aluminium self-propel chairs — the kind a person pushes themselves, with adjustable axle position, seat height and back — plus transport and standard folding chairs when they come in. Most of what we carry adjusts across a range of sizes, and what we do not have we can usually source.

What to check when buying a used manual wheelchair
- Seat width and depth. Measured hip width plus about an inch is the usual starting point; depth is thigh length minus roughly two inches so the seat does not press behind the knee. We list both on every chair.
- Self-propel or transport. Large rear wheels with push rims are for the user to propel; small rear wheels mean someone else pushes. Both are useful, and they are not interchangeable.
- Weight of the chair. A lightweight aluminium frame at 25–35 lb is a different daily experience from a 45 lb steel chair, especially if it goes in and out of a car.
- Adjustability. Adjustable axle position, seat-to-floor height and back angle are what let a chair be fitted rather than merely sat in. Fixed chairs are cheaper but only fit if they already fit.
- Tyres, bearings and brakes. Wheel bearings should spin freely and silently; brakes should hold on a slope. Tyres are consumable and we replace them when worn.
- Cushion. Anyone who sits for long periods needs a proper cushion, not the sling seat. If skin integrity is a concern that is a clinical decision, and we can supply pressure-relief cushions to match.
What we check before listing a manual wheelchair
- Frame checked for cracks, especially at welds and the axle plate; folding mechanism and cross-brace checked for play.
- Wheels trued, bearings checked, quick-release axles tested, tyres replaced if worn.
- Brakes, armrests, footrests and anti-tippers checked for function and secure fitting.
- Upholstery inspected and the whole chair professionally cleaned.
- Seat width, depth and height recorded as the chair is currently set — most adjust further at the fitting.
Sizing a manual wheelchair
The numbers that decide the frame are seated hip width, thigh length (back of the buttock to the back of the knee) and lower leg length (back of the knee to the heel). Shoulder height decides the backrest. A therapist will have these; if you do not, our fitting takes them, and most of our chairs adjust across a couple of inches in each direction anyway.
If the chair is for someone who will push themselves, axle position and seat height matter as much as width — an hour with the real chair sorts that out far better than a spec sheet.

How much does a used manual wheelchair cost?
Our used lightweight manual wheelchairs are generally priced from about $1,000 to $1,500, with the price on each listing; a comparable new lightweight self-propel chair typically costs considerably more once cushions and adjustments are added. Basic transport chairs are less. Delivery starts at $150 in Greater Victoria.
Can I try a wheelchair before buying it?
Yes. Every manual wheelchair we sell is covered by the Trial Program: a one-hour appointment where we bring the chair to you, measure, adjust seat width, depth, height, back angle, armrests and footrests, and do a transfer check. The trial fee is $150 and is fully refunded if you buy. It is not a take-home trial; the chair comes back with us unless it is purchased.
What size wheelchair do I need?
Seat width is usually hip width plus about an inch; seat depth is thigh length minus about two inches. Common adult widths are 16", 18" and 20". Because most of our chairs adjust, an exact match on paper matters less than a fitting — bring any measurements a therapist has given you and we will set the chair up to them.
Do you sell power wheelchairs or scooters?
No. We deal in manual and tilt-in-space wheelchairs only, and we do not buy, sell or service any power mobility — power wheelchairs, scooters or power-assist add-ons — because the batteries and electronics need specialist testing we are not set up to do.
Is a used wheelchair hygienic?
Every chair is professionally cleaned, including upholstery, before it is listed, and consumables like tyres and worn cushions are replaced. If a personal cushion is part of the sale it says so on the listing.
