The mattress on a hospital bed does two jobs: it has to fit the frame and articulate with it as the head and foot rise, and it has to protect the skin of someone who spends a lot of the day lying on it. A standard hospital foam mattress does the first job for most people. For anyone who cannot reposition themselves, or who already has skin breakdown, a pressure-relief mattress — a low air loss or alternating pressure system with its own pump — does the second.
Our foam mattresses are standard 36" x 80" hospital size and fit the beds we sell and most others. Air mattress systems are checked, cleaned and run before listing, and we will explain how to set the pump for the person's weight when we deliver.

What to check when buying a hospital bed mattress
- Size. Standard hospital mattresses are 36" wide and 80" long, and about 6" thick. Check your bed frame — some adjustable beds use different sizes, and bariatric beds are wider.
- Foam or air. Foam is simpler and quieter and suits people who can move themselves. Alternating pressure and low air loss mattresses have a pump and are for people at real risk of pressure injuries; that is a clinical call.
- Cover. The cover should be waterproof, wipeable, and intact — a torn cover on a foam mattress means the foam is exposed and the mattress should not be reused.
- Pump and cells on an air mattress. Run the pump, check every cell inflates, and check the hoses and CPR release. This is what we test before listing one.
- Weight rating. Air systems in particular have a range the pump is designed for; it is on the label and on our listing.
- Height with rails. A thick mattress raises the person relative to the bed rails; too thick and the rails stop being effective.
What we check before listing a mattress
- Foam mattresses: cover checked for tears and seams, foam checked for compression and body impressions; anything with a compromised cover is not resold.
- Air systems: pump run and cycled, every cell inflated and checked, hoses, connectors and CPR release tested, cover checked.
- Cleaned and disinfected with the cover on, following the maker's guidance for the cover material.
- Size and weight range recorded on the listing.

Hospital & Pressure-Relief Mattresses: questions people ask
What size mattress fits a hospital bed?
A standard hospital bed takes a 36" x 80" mattress, usually about 6" thick. Full and bariatric frames take 42" or 48" widths. Check the frame's label or ask us with the bed's make and model and we will confirm what fits.
What is the difference between an alternating pressure and a low air loss mattress?
An alternating pressure mattress inflates and deflates alternate cells on a cycle so no part of the body bears weight continuously. A low air loss mattress lets a small, constant flow of air through the surface to keep the skin cool and dry. Many systems do both. Which one someone needs depends on their skin risk and is a decision for their nurse or therapist; we will supply and set up whichever they specify.
Are used mattresses hygienic?
Hospital mattresses are designed to be reused: they have waterproof, wipeable covers made for disinfection. We clean and disinfect every one and do not resell any mattress whose cover is torn or whose foam is compromised. If you would rather have new, we can source a new mattress as well.
Does the mattress come with the bed?
Bed listings say whether a mattress is included. Where it is not, adding one of our mattresses to the same order adds nothing to the delivery charge because it travels on the same trip.
Do you buy used mattresses?
No. Mattresses and cushions are on the list of things we do not buy. If you have a mattress in good condition, a local equipment loan program or charity may take it.
