A patient lift — a hoist — moves someone who cannot bear their own weight between bed, chair, commode and back without a caregiver lifting them. It is the piece of equipment that most directly protects the person from a fall and the caregiver from a back injury, and it is the one families most often put off because of the price of a new one.
We carry two kinds. Floor lifts roll on a wheeled base, run on a rechargeable battery, and go anywhere the base fits under the furniture. Ceiling lifts run on a track fixed to the ceiling, take no floor space and are easier for one caregiver, but the track has to be installed. Both use a sling, and the sling has to be the right type and size for the person — which is the part people most often get wrong.

What to check when buying a used patient lift
- Weight capacity. Commonly 400–450 lb for standard floor lifts; bariatric models go higher. Check the label, and give yourself margin.
- Battery and charger. On a floor lift the battery is the usual weak point. It should hold a charge through a day of transfers; ours are tested and replaced if they do not.
- Base width and clearance. The legs of a floor lift have to open around a chair and slide under the bed. Measure the clearance under the bed and the width of the chair.
- Emergency lowering. Every powered lift should have a manual or emergency lowering function; check it works.
- Spreader bar and sling attachment. Clip-style and loop-style bars take different slings. Make sure the sling you have or plan to buy matches.
- Slings. Slings are personal items with a service life. Buy the right type (full-body, toileting, standing) and size for the person, and inspect stitching and loops before every use. We can supply slings to match.
- For ceiling lifts: the track and installation. A ceiling lift needs a track fixed to structure, installed by someone who knows what they are doing. Ask us about installation when you enquire.
What we check before listing a patient lift
- Actuator or motor run through full lift and lower under load; emergency lowering tested.
- Battery load-tested and charger checked; batteries replaced if they do not hold a charge.
- Mast, boom, base legs and leg-spread mechanism checked for cracks, bends and play; castors and brakes serviced.
- Spreader bar and sling hooks or clips checked for wear and secure attachment.
- Hand control and cabling tested.
- Whole unit professionally cleaned and disinfected; weight rating recorded on the listing.
Floor lift or ceiling lift?
A floor lift costs less, needs no installation and can move between rooms, but it needs floor space, a clear path, and usually two people to use comfortably. A ceiling lift takes no floor space, is smoother, and lets one caregiver do transfers alone, but the track is fixed to one room or route and has to be installed. For long-term care at home with regular transfers in one bedroom, a ceiling lift is often the better answer; for a shorter period or a small home, a floor lift usually is. How much does a used patient lift cost?
Used floor lifts and ceiling lift motors are priced on each listing and are typically a fraction of the cost of the same lift new; ceiling lift track and installation are quoted separately. Delivery and setup for a lift starts at $100 in Greater Victoria. Tell us what you need and we will quote it, including slings.
Do I need training to use a patient lift?
Yes. A lift is safe when it is used properly and dangerous when it is not — most incidents come from the wrong sling, a sling fitted badly, or a transfer done in a hurry. If a home-care team or therapist is involved they will usually train caregivers; we show you the lift's functions at setup, and we will always suggest a proper demonstration for anyone who will use it.
Are slings included with a used lift?
Slings are personal items with a limited service life, so they are usually not included unless the listing says so. We can supply the right type and size of sling for the person, and it is worth budgeting for one with the lift.
Can a ceiling lift be installed in a rental or a condo?
Often, but it fixes to the ceiling structure, so it needs the landlord's or strata's agreement and a proper installation. Freestanding gantry frames exist for situations where you cannot fix to the ceiling. Ask us about the options when you enquire.
What weight can your patient lifts carry?
Standard lifts are commonly rated to 400–450 lb; the exact rating for each lift is on the label and on our listing. If you need more than that, tell us and we will source a bariatric lift.
